The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus.
This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.
In New Zealand, a State of National Emergency was declared due to COVID-19. It was in force between 12:21pm on 25 March 2020 and 12:21pm on Wednesday 13 May 2020.
An alert system was brought in to manage and minimise the risk of COVID-19. (www.covid19.govt.nz and www.who.int)

Dates when different Alert Levels came into force

COVID-19 Alert Level 4 - Lockdown, came into force at 11:59pm Wednesday 25 March 2020.
Likely that disease is not contained
People instructed to stay at home in their bubble other than for essential personal movement.

COVID-19 Alert Level 3 - Restrict, came into force at 11:59pm Monday 27 April 2020.
High risk the disease is not contained.
People instructed to stay home in their bubble other than for essential personal movement.
Physical distancing of 2 metres outside home or one metre in controlled environments like schools and workplaces.

COVID-19 Alert Level 2 - Reduce, came into force at 11:59pm Wednesday 13 May 2020.
The disease is contained, but the risk of community transmission remains.
People can connect with friends and family, and socialise in groups of up to 100.

COVID-19 Alert Level 1 - Prepare, came into force at 11:59pm Monday 8 June 2020.
The disease is contained in New Zealand.
Border entry measures to minimise risk of importing COVID-19 cases.

COVID-19 Alert Level 3 came into force for Auckland region at 12 noon on Wednesday 12 August, 2020.

COVID-19 Alert Level 2 came into force for all regions except Auckland at 12 noon on Wednesday 12 August, 2020.
