Faithfull Photography Collection
DescriptionFaithfull Photography Collection
Faithfull Photography Ltd. was in Whangarei from the mid-1960's until the end of 1969, when it was taken over by Northern Advocate photographer Nick Randall.
It was established and operated by Wally and Barbara Faithfull, first from their home at 16 King Street Kengsington, but from October 1967 in their upstairs studio in McKay Electrical Ltd's new building in Water Street.
Their work covered weddings, portraits, social functions, in-home studies of children and families, sports and cultural groups, as well as aerial photography.
At that time, photography was mainly black and white; colour was in it's infancy. Where colour work was required, this was mainly done by applying oil colouring to sepia-toned (browned) prints by a skilled colourist. However, the studio was also beginning to do a limited amount of work with colour film, which then had to be processed at an Auckland photo laboratory.
When handing over the studio to Nick Randall, a quantity of sample images was retained and transported with the Faithfull family to Auckland, where they remained for 43 years, undisturbed, until Barbara Faithfull returned with them to Whangarei in January 2013, and discovered that the entire collection was still in excellent condition.
By 2015 she is considering donating the collection to the Whangarei Library for it to be digitised; copies of prints would then be made available to the general public for a nominal amount.
The prints are sorted into the following categories:-
1. Weddings
2. Babies, children and families
3. Ballet and tap dancers
4. Portraits
5. Youth, sports, cultural, choirs
6. Miscellaneous
