Awanui Wireless Station on the Awanui to Kaitaia Road

DescriptionThe Awanui Wireless Station showing Officers quarters, Officer in charge quarters and station in the distance. Commissioned on the 18th of December, 1913, Radio Awanui was the most important link with British and Allied ships in the Pacific Ocean during World War 1. The station was manned by a military guard of 65 men during World War 1. The station and its 394 feet high tower was closed and decommissioned in 1930.
Standing in the foreground is Mona Puckey, daughter of Arnold Puckey. The youth on the horse is possibly her younger brother Gerard. The land for the Awanui Wireless Station was acquired from the Puckey family by the Government.
