Whau Valley Coal Mine

DescriptionBuildings, men and equipment at the Whau Valley Coal Mine. After Jonny Rake discovered coal in the area, the mine was opened in 1865 by Henry Walton and William Grahame. It operated for three years. The settlement around the mine included a butcher's shop, bakery and quarters for the men, many of whom were Cornish miners. The first 'flats' to be built in Whangarei are on the left.
