DescriptionThe Whangarei waterfront with a steamer at the town wharf, yachts, dinghies, a boat shed and Cafler House in its original location. Whangarei's waterfront was the centre of commerce and transport in Whangarei's early years. The grounds of Eugene and Uranie Cafler's Whangarei home "Sans Souci" extended inland to where Pak n Save is now (2021) located. Eduouard Eugene Cafler was a Frenchman born at Douai in 1797. He established a hotel, store and post office in the earliest days of Whangarei's settlement by Europeans.
