The SS Apanui, Northern Steam Ship Company, on the Awanui River

DescriptionThe steamship Apanui approaching the wharf on the Awanui River where passengers were waiting. The Northern Steamship Company's coastal steamer the Apanui ran between Auckland and Awanui in the years during the years 1905 - 1937, making calls at Houhora and Kaimaumau before her tortuous journey up the snake-like bends of the Awanui River. Viewed from a distance as she chugged up the narrow river, the Apanui appeared to be travelling through paddocks without the aid of a waterway. To negotiate an S-bend near Awanui township, the little steamer usually had to reverse backwards and forwards before being able to complete her journey.
