This family lived at the 100 acre "Hill Farm", three and a half miles from Kaitaia township. Mary Dunn, known as Sophie by her family, had great mana among Māori. She was known to them as Pae-tangi-haere after a noted chieftainess of the Rawara tribe, a mark of great respect. She was respected for her knowledge of common ailments and saved many lives with her treatments.
