Sidney Milton Going
Super Sid
BiographySid Going (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Hine) was an extraordinary sportsman and rugby player. Born in Kawakawa in Northland, Sid was educated at Maromaku Primary School, Northland College, and then as a founding student of the Latter Day Saints Church College in Hamilton. He and his three brothers grew up playing rugby. Sid briefly played first-class rugby for North Auckland in 1962 before travelling to Alberta, Canada, as a missionary for two years. After his return, he married Colleen Rex and they raised a family of five on their farm in Maromaku.
Sid played rugby for North Auckland, the New Zealand Māoris, and the All Blacks, playing 249 first-class games, including 29 test matches. Though not tall, he was a fast, powerful, and determined player. His position was half-back, and he captained the All Blacks five times. He played one hundred and eleven games for North Auckland and eighty-six for New Zealand, scoring tries eighty-five times and earning 398 points overall.
Sid’s rugby career took him around the world, and he had many fans, both in New Zealand and overseas. His role as half-back meant he was often in the limelight and he played a critical role in tactics. He was an easily recognised and much admired player.
Sid, along with his brothers Ken and Brian, who were also successful first-class rugby players, perfected the triple scissors manoeuvre. Using this gameplay, the three brothers and their teammates left their opposition confused, allowing territory to be gained or tries to be made in many first-class games.
Sid retired from playing first-class rugby in 1978 then was a coach for Northland Rugby and a rugby selector. He is described as one of "rugby’s greats". In 1977, he was awarded an MBE for services to rugby. He was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.
Sid and Colleen's son Jared played sevens rugby for New Zealand, and their son Milton played Super Rugby for the Crusaders.
Sid Going was a bishop in his church for seven years.
When “Super Sid” passed away at Maromaku in 2024, he was 80 years old. He was a great sportsman, a gentleman, and a humble man of faith.
