DescriptionRobert Mair, son of early Northland settlers Gilbert and Elizabeth Mair, recorded his childhood memories and other material in notebooks. Volume 1 which has a contents index in the back, was written by Robert in 1917 at age 87. It includes descriptions of historic events like the burning of the Boyd, Heke's war, and the sacking of Kororareka. It also contains correspondence, descriptions of Waimate, Roberton Island, Russell, Paihia and Kerikeri, and references to Colenso, whaling, and an American polar expedition.
