DescriptionImage shows the Wesleyan Methodist Church that stood on Grant Street in Kamo, Whangārei. The church was completed in 1881 and dedicated by Rev. William Morely D.D on 4 December 1881 and opened the same day. It cost £400 to build and seated 180 people. The church was built in the Gothic Revival style that was fashionable in Victorian Britain at the time. Its pointed-arch doorway, narrow lancet windows, and ornate pinnacles on either side of the façade reflect this influence. These features were adapted to our local environment, constructed in readily available timber rather than traditional stone — a style often referred to as Carpenter Gothic. Electric lights were installed in 1917. Renovations were carried out in 1948 and 1962. The ornate pinnacles were removed at some point before 1966 as evidenced by later photos. A new electric organ was installed in 1964. The church was closed in 1971 as part of the Methodist churches' rationalisation programme, then demolished.
