Yvonne Rust was born in Whangarei on the 19th of November, 1922. The daughter of Mr and Mrs Gordon James Rust, Yvonne spent most of her childhood in the far north of Northland where her parents were teachers. The family then moved to the Waikato. Yvonne studied at Christchurch University and gained a Diploma of Fine Arts. Becoming a teacher, potter and painter, Yvonne set up studios in Christchurch then on the West Coast of the South Island. In 1967 she moved back north and bought her property at Parua Bay. In the early 1980s Yvonne created a studio in a former quarry at Selwyn Avenue in Whangarei which became an arts centre for the community. Yvonne was awarded the QSM in 1982 for community service. She died in Greymouth on the 26th of June, 2002 aged 79.
