BiographyGarry Alexander John Frew, the former sports editor of The Northern Advocate newspaper is a name synonymous with Northland sport.
It was during his time at the Advocate, that Garry assembled this vast collection of sporting articles, which provide a wealth of information about sport in Northland, from the 1950’s onwards.
However it wasn’t just his duties as a prolific sports writer that made Garry well known, but also his own sporting achievements that set him apart.
He represented New Zealand at table tennis for many years and coached and mentored many other Northlanders to also achieve at national and international level in his beloved sport.
He was honoured with life memberships by Northland Table Tennis, Rugby and Tennis before being awarded an MBE for services to sport in 1992.
At the time of his sudden death in 2000 Garry was serving as patron of Sport Northland – an organisation he had dedicated much time to, having been a foundation board member.
Garry Frew was inducted posthumously as a Northland Legend of Sport in 2006. Date of Death2000
