Mr Alfred James Mfirdocfi has been serving Marsden electorate

MB A.J.MURDOCH(Advocate, I938)

on and off since I922. Mr Murdoch, who is 6I, was born at
Onehunga, and started his career ,as a teacher there, following
which he was stationed at Northcote, Hikurangi, Mata and Ruakaka.

In I9I9 he retired from teaching to take up farmdng, and
took a prominent part in the Waipu railway movement.

He entered Parliament in I922, but lost to Mr W.Jones
in I925. Three years later, however, he defeated Mr Jones and
sat in Parliament until beaten at the last election.

He was Minister of Mines and Agriculture in I93m.3I Forbes_
Government, and following the Goalition was appointed Chief
Hhip Government Whip. Prior to last election he was elected
chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Board.

M A.T.BRAINSBY, "FATHER" OF THE WHANGAREI LIBRARY.

Mr Arthur Todd Brainsby died on I5:Bk4I. He was born in;
Staffordshire in I87I, and came to N.Z.in I9I3, and to Whangarei
inI9I5. He went overseas with the Forces, and returned to
Whangarei where he took a leading part in local affaias.

Mr Brainsby was educated at Manchester University and was
generally regarded as one of the best read men in the Dominion.
At the time of his death he was the president of the Whangarei
branch of the N.Z.Labour Party. _

Mr Brainsby was married in London in I904 to Edith Anna
Kingsford, a prominent singer and musician, and in addition to
his widow he leaveu two sons - Mr Eric Brainsby of Te Kuiti, and
Lieutenant Harold Brainsby of the N.Z.forces. There Was also
a daughter Marjorie, who died in infancy. There is one
grandchild.

Mrs C.R.Lovatt(Obit. I4:5:40)

Mrs C.R.Lovatt, who died this morning , was the daughter
of Mr and Mrs S.Driver, who came to N.Z. from Sheffield to settle
first to settle at Parua Bay, and later at Thames.

Mr and Mrs C.R.Lovatt were married on Xmas Day,I890, and had
lived in Whangarei since I9OI. Here the fruit-canning business

of Driver and Lovatt was established, only to fail shortly
afterwards.

Mr Louutt then returned to his trade as a builder and
eventually founded the present sawmilling firm of which he is head
Mrs Lovatt was a foundation member of the Baptist Church in

Whangarei. and in the early days the mid—week services were held

in her home. The present church was first established in I902.
She was Superintendent of the Temperance Cradle Roll.

She is survived by her husband,Mesdames S.C.Hopkins, J.D.Keyte,
Hlgflger, F.Tapper,G.Pyle,C.G.Creamer,Messrs Stan, R.D., C.Roy,
