Kauri, ggathig egstralis. "Tenenahuts", Haipcua horest. Height I70tt.
The name "Tanenahuta", given hy the laoris many years ago and meaning
"King of the Forest" entitled it to the no.1 position it held in a list
compiled by the late DrH.H.1llan for the Royal low Zealand Institute of
Horticulture. Despite its great age and a certain amount of internal rot.
this is still certain to he for a long tine yet, New Zealand's best known
and publicised tree.
Kauri, Agathis sustralig. "Te Katua lgahere.” Haipoua Forest. Height 98ft.
This tree was named by the laoris hundreds of years ago, "To latua N ahere"
meaning "Father of the Forest.” It has the biggest girth(53ft 10in but the
shortest merohantable length and the shortest total tllzth height, but is
probably the oldest of all the named keuri trees extant. It naturally has
a lot of internal rot.

The name "Toronui" means "tall or reaching as far as the sky.” Nevertheless.
it is named after the small river beside which the tree is growing.
Kanri. ggathig ggstfiglis, "Yokes Tree lo.I” Haipcus Forest. height I44 ft.
The Yates tree was named after a Dalmatian gundigger who found it years ago
and recently revisited it. ‘
Xauri. ggathis austrglis at Iangawhere near Dargaville. Planted on 1th June
1852 by latthew Iarriner to commemorate the birth of his son. Irederick
Iarriner was concerned with the export of spars for the British levy.
In 1953 the tree had a height of 53 ft, but in 1959 although the diameter
had increased half an inch to 2I% in, the height was reduced to 35ft
because of a broken top.
Kauri. ggathis ggstralig, "Hckianga”, Omahuta Forest. Height I76 ft.
"Hokianga" means returning point, but the reason for this none is not known.
Kauri, 539351: gugtrggis, "Tanisha" Ouahuta Forest. height 146 ft.
Although the name leans “monster” the tree is of average size.
Kauri, ”lntnnmx1 Ag5th;g_gg§3;§l;3. "Rakaunui', Omahuta Forest.
Height I70 ft. “Rakaunu£" means big tree, and in fact this is the tallest
of those kauris with average girth for their group.

Wrokeiwa” means there are nine of as”
Xauri, ggathig gggtgglis "lgapuhi', Onahuta Forest.
Named ”Rgap 1” after the northern tribe.
Xanri, éggghis austrglig. "lgatushine" neaning two sisters. Two trees,
one upper, one lower. it with girth of tttxitnn 22ft 2 ins and 21ft I in.
and 150 ft high. Both trees are noted for their long trunks and great
height for such modest girths.

"Tokerau“ ii the name for lorthland.

Height I50 ft.
The above seven kauris are recorded mainly because they are named and therefor
must have significance for the laoris.
Pohugukawgs.
Pchutukawa, letrggidergg excelsg, In Butler's Bay, opposite the lsnhgonui
wharf. Sons large trees planted in the form of a cross around an old
graveyard are the higglst "planted-out” pohutukawas yet seen. captain
Butler, who was master of the whaling harque, liggcd settled there in
the 1840's. his house is still being lived in hy the present owner,
R.G.larchant. Butler was a somber of the House of Representatives for
langonui from I881-6. he died in 1875. It is presumed that Bitler
planted these trees, In:

Pohutukawa, letrogidercs excelsa, in Butler's Bay. Xangonui. The largest
pohutukawa yet recorded, with a height of 60ft and a spread of I20tt (in 1968
Age possibly between 500 and 800 years.
