I Introduction
This report describes an archaeological survey of an eight
hectare property at Puketona Road, Bay of Islands, for the
owners , King and Paterson.
The property is on the eastern edge of the Puketona basalt
field, discussed below and across the road from the Puketutu
pa and Waitangi River. It is about eight kilometres from the
Bay of Islands at Haruru Falls.
The owners intention is to subdivide off three one hectare
lots, keeping the residue of five hectares as Lot 1.
The property currently has about one third in l2yr old
Avocado trees, the balance in pasture and two dwellings.
This archaeological survey was to record all the apparent
archaeological features and recommend management procedures
where necessary. Terms used are according to Daniels, 1984.
2 History
This land was once part of OLC59, one of Henry Williams
purchases from the Maori in. the 18305. Williams initial
claim was for about 2000 acres, bought on the 28th May 1839
from the chiefs Hone Heke, Te Kamera and 29 others for cash
and merchandise to the value of 279pounds.
Williams had shepherds on the property about 1840 as one is
described as being murdered, Lee;228. 0
In 1851 Henry transferred ownership to his son Edward who
built the house now known as Choat House.
A survey in 1856 found the area to be 1413 acres.
A quarry was opened.on the basalt scoria fields and is now
the.Puketona quarry, on Choats neighbouring.property.
