Description

Sophia Eastgate (nee Black) with the New Zealand flag outside Puriri Park Retirement Home. Sophia grew up in Kerikeri, the daughter of Ethel (nee Kemp) and John Black. The family lived with Sophia's grandparents, Sophia and James Kemp. Sophia later became a nurse in Auckland, where she met her future husband, Henry Eastgate. The couple married in 1927 and moved to Kerikeri in 1938. They had three children, Gwyneth, Ruth and Anthony, but sadly Henry died in 1944, leaving Sophia to bring up the children on her own. The following year, Sophia moved with her children to Whangarei and became the matron of Carruth House, the boarding hostel of Whangarei Boys High School where she worked for eight years. She then became Home Sister at the Whangarei Nurses Home, a position she held for nine years. Later she went to live at Selwyn Park Retirement Home where she ran a little shop and took on the job of raising and lowering the flag, a Union Jack, every day provided the weather was fine.
